i’m very excited about the lower haight’s newest addition, maven. while neighboring spots offer up great quick eats, beer and your basic mixed drinks, and uva stocks us with wine and delicious bites, we were missing somewhere to sit down for a meal with a high end cocktail.
the premise of the menu is to pair cocktails (or wine) with food and everything we tried was solid, and i imagine will only improve with time, as we visited during their first month open. there are plenty of seats at long communal tables, additional seating upstairs and at the bar, and a beautiful “live wall” brings a splash of brightness to the space.
cocktail wise i tried the international mistress: amaro, lemon, mezcal, orgeat, grapefruit served tall over ice; and the mr. wiggles: bourbon, amaro, vermouth (a twist on the manhattan). food we tried the monterey calamari prepared two ways, and the seared arctic char with smoked fumé, pei mussels, root vegetables (easily the standout between the two).
we’ll definitely be back!
