one of the motivations for this trip was my ten year high school reunion, and we had our official reunion dinner at warung kayu in kerobokan bali, just north of seminyak. we were pretty much the only ones in the restaurant that evening and got to be as boisterous as we liked.
the owner is a former business type with a stellar wine collection. the chefs are two very young and talented expats, backed by an equally young and talented team. the entire kitchen team double as servers which makes the experience all the more intimate. that and the owner is around to recommend on and off menu wines and share some kind of homemade booze softened with fruitiness (dangerous stuff.) its a no menu restaurant, the chefs go to the market daily and come up with a four-course menu based on what was fresh and inspired them. diners get a choice between two appetizers and mains.
amuse – chicken nugget with soursop honey mustard and pickled onion
1st – marlin tartar with arugula
2nd – cream of mushroom soup (if this came in a vat i would have been happy!)
3rd – seared duck with coucous, steamed asparagus and orange gastrique
or seared salmon with bell peppers, balsamic reduction, potato rouille and parsnip puree (my preferred of the two entrees)
dessert – guiness chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream, strawberry and vanilla cream
wine highlight – john glaetzer, 2005 john’s blend, cab-sauv
food photo fail. oops.
